Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo conducts

"Books for Babies" book drive

At its monthly meeting July 9, the Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo donated 150 books to the Esperanza Health & Dental Centers' Success By 6 program as a results of a campaign called "Books for Babies."

For each book donated, members and guests received one door prize ticket.  The door prizes were $50 gift certificate to local restaurants, The Grill, Outback Steak House and The Pearl on the Concho.

The mission of La Esperanza Clinic is to provide quality primary preventative health and dental care to all people, particularly the medically underserved and uninsured of San Angelo and the surrounding Concho Valley regardless of ability to pay.  Esperanza's Success  By 6 is a program designed to help children of teenage parents.  It provides community resources and skills to help children born to teenage parents be successful in life, and it provides teenage parents information and training necessary to be good parents.

Esperanza's Chief Executive Officer Mike Campbell said, "Research indicates that the sooner a child learns to read, the outcomes of their lives in all areas improves significantly.  The donation of reading material by the Desk and Derrick Club demonstrates the membership's commitment to the future of these kids and our community."

"Our club is committed to giving back to the community," said Rene Peckham, DDCSA Communications Chairperson.  "We are pleased to help the children of Success By 6 develop a love for reading and to further their education.  We are honored to invest in the children of the Concho Valley in this way."

Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo contributes

linens to The Salvation Army

"This is above and beyond what I expected," said Debbie Berryman, social services director of The Salvation Army in San Angelo, as she saw the number of donations brought to the Red Shield Lodge by members of the Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo.  "This is amazing," she exclaimed.

On March, 19, 2014, the DDCSA donated a trailer full of linens -- hundreds of pillows, pillowcases, sheets and towels -- to The Salvation Army Red Shield Lodge at 122 W. 2nd Street in San Sangelo, a shelter for homeless men, women and families on a temporary basis.

The effort was called "Linens for Love" because items were collected at various energy companies during February and in conjunction with Valentine's Day.  It is just one of the club's community service efforts.  Later in the year, the DDCSA will coordinate another project aimed at enhancing another aspect of life in the area.

"The Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo is dedicated to helping our community," said Tiffanie Black, President of the DDCSA.  "Our donations to The Salvation Army's Red Shield Lodge represent care and concern by the local energy companies from our group and beyond.  It is our honor to make life better for those in need."

"The Salvation Army is leading the fight for at-risk homeless persons to find a way out of the cycle of hopelessness," said Major David Feeser, San Angelo Corps Officer at The Salvation Army.  "The Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo's donation and the compassion that accompanies it will make an impact on the way we are able to help.  It is through this kind of generosity that families, children and individuals are able to get a new start.  We are thankful for the contributions."
